Set all free - Act to end slavery

The three year set all free project comes to an end on 31 March 2008. set all free was established by Churches Together in England in 2005 to encourage churches and other interested parties to remember, reflect and respond to issues of slavery and freedom. The aim was to make connections between past and present day slavery in order to end modern forms of exploitation and prejudice.

Over the last three years set all free has worked alongside a number of groups to raise the profile of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the need for cross-cultural engagement and dialogue.

25 March 2007 marked 200 years to the day that a Parliamentary Bill was passed to abolish the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the British colonies.

Although slavery was finally abolished in the Western Hemisphere in 1888, it is estimated that there are tens of millions of people still in forms of servitude today.

set all free has produced a wide range of resources — see the website — which have educated, informed and inspired many people to find out more about their history and work to make slavery a thing of the past.

The three year project was entirely funded by gifts and grants from Christian organisations and Trusts. We would like to extend our grateful thanks to the Jerusalem Trust and Congregational & General Insurance plc for their respective funding of the project. No funding was received from the Heritage Lottery Fund or Government.

Funding for a subsequent project on the 'unfinished business' has been unsuccessful.

We would also like to thank those who helped during this three year 'journey' and encourage them to continue their engagement via those organisations within the set all free network.
